I can't believe I'm actually defending Avril Lavigne, but here it goes.
I honestly don't get what the big deal about her new video for "Girlfriend" (
here) is.
If you scan the comments on iTunes beneath it, you find people saying things like, "she's sold out," "she's such a poser," "she's encouraging people to pick on nerdy girls." Well, let me clear a few things up...
Since when has Avril Lavigne ever
not been a poser? So-called fans say she used to be punk, but in reality, she was never anything edgier than rock/pop. Yeah, she wore ties and lots of Hot Topic clothing, but all of her music was pop-influenced and it was geared towards teenage girls. It was angst-ridden, fluffy, and adolescent. It was in no way, shape, or form punk. I'm no expert on music genres, but even I can tell the difference.
As for "she's sold out"? I'm so fucking sick of that argument. Your artist didn't "sell out," she's experimenting with other musical genres and as a fan, you should be supportive of that! Would you honestly want her to write the same songs over and over again? Give the girl a break. We all grow up and change, so why can't she? If you really like her old stuff better, fine, but don't bash her for trying to break the mold that she's been cast into.
Finally, we have the "she's encouraging people to pick on nerdy girls" complaint. Um, no. I find this one of the most ridiculous excuses I've ever encountered not to like the video. No one would have cared if it was a blonde cheerleader getting her boyfriend stolen--and wouldn't that have been encouraging people to pick on them? No, it's the poor unfortunate nerdy girl who's now going to have more people making fun of her! Oh, wait.
Do you actually think anyone is stupid enough to start picking on geeks because Avril Lavigne has supposedly endorsed it? That they'd watch "Girlfriend" and say to themselves, "Hm... now I want to steal a nerdy girl's boyfriend, because Avril did it"? If someone seriously does that, they had problems way before "Girlfriend" came along. This whole situation reminds me of people who want to ban Barbie: "She's sending girls the wrong message and telling them that they have to wait for a prince to come to their rescue!" Yeah, um... I used to love Barbies and I don't seem to have that mindset. Avril Lavigne isn't going to influence me in any way, either.
And you know what's the worst? That people are stupid enough to justify me writing this long piece (instead of working on my English short story) defending Avril Lavigne. Get a grip, people! She's always been a poser, she hasn't sold out, and I'm sure she'd think you were an loser if you picked on nerdy girls because she did it in her music video! "Girlfriend" is supposed to be fluffy. It is FUN. F-U-N. It is not promoting nerd-bashing. It's the same thing as "Don't Cha" by the Pussycat Dolls, only with a different singer. Seriously, get over it. Don't you have more important things to be worrying about?
