FORMAT: Movie
TITLE: Gladiator
ACTORS: Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix
Second movie we watched today; I've wanted to see this for well over a year now.
01. To be honest, I didn't think this was as great as everyone made it out to be. I had high expectations for it; while, yes, it was a good movie, it wasn't some groundbreaking achievement in the genre as I had anticipated. The gladiator fights are something Hollywood doesn't seem to cover too often, but it wasn't a movie that stuck with me after I had watched it.
02. I wasn't particularly happy with the music. It was alright, but sometimes it became way too brassy and it didn't have the epic feeling it should have. Imho, all of Hans Zimmer's scores start to blend after awhile. There are parts in there that sounded exactly like Pirates of the Caribbean.
03. Maximus's affair with Lucille was never explained well enough. They said numerous times that something had happened between them in the past, but they never said what it was, and the kiss between them towards the end occurred out of the blue and wasn't followed up on at all.
04. Wow, Commodus was incredibly needy. I think there were some serious childhood abandonment issues going on there, and kudos to Joaquin Phoenix for being able to pull that off.
05. I totally called Commodus and Lucille being incestuous, though I had guessed it to be a two-sided thing, while it became obvious that he was the only one interested. Again, that was likely due to some deeper problems that he had (namely with his father having such an interest in Maximus), so it was actually kind of interesting. I think they did an excellent job with his character, actually--he was probably the most developed out of all of them.
06. The gladiator fights were amazing, especially the one where Maximus ended up leading them like he would an army. I love how Commodus turns to his advisor and says something to the effect of, "My history might not be too clear, but didn't the barbarians end up losing the battle?"
07. Lucius was such a pompous little child. I wonder if he ended up turning against his mother in the end--they never really cleared that up, and while it would make sense that he remained with her (especially after Commodus died), they did have one scene where he appeared to be leaning towards his uncle.
08. They definitely should have given the song "Now We Are Free" more prominence, because it's an amazing track and would have been awesome to use during the last scene. Instead, they kind of faded it into the background.
Again, I was somewhat disappointed, but for the most part it was a good movie.

XD
Can I just point out how utterly ridiculous it was that Commodus ended up fighting with Maximus? The Emperor would have NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER done that.

Then again, he is insane, so...
=D I loved the part where Maximus says his ridiculously long name. I can't even remember it, but the scene pretty much lost all of it's respectability at that point.
