I was reading some Glee secrets blog on Tumblr, and practically all of the secrets were about Sam/Santana's sexuality. It seems like most of the people in fandom believe that Sam is gay, and that Santana is completely lesbian.

I just... I don't get why it has to be black and white. We've already seen that Sam is attracted to girls: first Quinn, and now Mercedes. There's the reality that a lot of gay people initially started out liking the opposite sex, and only came to realize their preferences later on in life. But, come on, this is a TV show. That kind of subtlety probably doesn't exist for most programs, and definitely not Glee. Unless the writers are really going for an out of left field plot twist, it's pretty obvious that, canonically speaking, Sam is either straight or bi. The impression I'm getting, however, is that most of the fandom is still treating the scrapped storyline for Sam (I think he was initially supposed to be gay) as if it were fact, and not a scrapped storyline.

I understand why people want Sam to be gay. And it's cool, because that's what fanfic/fanart/fanvids are for - you get to change the characters' love interests and all that. But when it gets to the point where you're arguing that Sam is canonically gay? Sorry, but I think it's pretty obvious that he's being written as straight (possibly bi). Remember: with Santana, we knew very early on into the show that she was sleeping with Brittany. With Karofsky, we had never seen him with a girlfriend. Sam, however, was shown to be completely in love with Quinn and is now dating Mercedes. There's been absolutely no hint, whatsoever, that he's attracted only to guys (or, arguably, to guys at all). Could he just be very, very, very in the closet? Maybe, if it were real life. But, again, this is a TV show, and they're not going to write something like that without dropping some hints along the way.

Then there's Santana. Honestly, I'm kind of disappointed by the writers' insistence on categorizing her as lesbian. Again, yes, I know that you can sleep with lots of men and still be lesbian. But, idk, I really liked it when Santana was like, "Screw labels, I'll sleep with whomever the fuck I want." It was kind of empowering, as a girl, to see another girl who could sleep around with a bunch of guys and basically just use them for sex. Why can't she be physically attracted to guys, but romantically attracted to girls? It honestly just seems to me like the writers decided to make her lesbian because they were being praised for the Brittany/Santana pairing, whereas before they were writing her as more bisexual.

So... Meh. I guess this is a roundabout way of saying that I'd rather see more characters who are bisexual, or whose sexuality is fluid, than have people be classified immediately as gay when they express an interest in the same sex (or when their characters were initially supposed to be gay, but now are clearly being written differently). It's not so black and white as the fandom makes it out to be, you know?
