FORMAT: Movie
TITLE: Saving Private Ryan
ACTORS: Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Paul Giamatti

01. The first battle scene was really intense. Honestly, skip it if that sort of stuff squicks you out. It wasn't so much the blood as people just getting shot left and right, and most of the time they didn't do the neat camera editing where you're spared the actual impact of the bullet. Don't get me wrong; it was great filming, just somewhat graphic.

02. I love the shot of all the ships docking at Normandy. I'm thinking that's where the shot in Troy of all the ships landing on the beach came from--they were basically the same thing, only taken from opposite sides. So, so, so gorgeous.

03. One of the things I hate about films like these is that, even when they're just sitting with each other and talking, I always think someone's going to randomly pop up and shoot them, or that a landmine is going to go off or something.

04. I didn't really get the point of them going into that town and taking the child for a few minutes. Captain Miller later said something along the lines of, "And that's why you don't take children with you," but I didn't understand how the guy in their group who got shot had anything to do with them randomly holding a kid for a bit.

05. The youngest soldier was so cute! I knew he was going to die the moment they were walking through the fields and he was being cocky, but I was secretly rooting for him the entire time. Then, of course, he dies and that stupid coward (I completely forget his name, but the one who could speak German and French) survived... ugh.

06. I've never been in his place, but Private Ryan's reaction when he found out that all his brothers had died seemed kind of lacking. The one before him (hilarious scene, btw; the other Ryan must be feeling so relieved) expressed his grief much more convincingly. Then again, I thought he did a great job telling the story about his brothers (also hilarious) to Captain Miller.

07. I really liked the last battle scene. All of the others after Normandy had seemed totally pointless, but this one I could actually understand why they were staying and fighting. I loved how they were setting up the town so that they could ambush the enemy; the sticky bombs were totally awesome.

08. I can't believe no one killed that coward! What an asshole. There he is, hiding with all this ammo on him, doing nothing even though his friends are getting killed... I can understand if he was terrified, but at the very least he should have given the ammo to someone else. There was one thing I missed at the end, though--that one guy he killed, was that man the one who walked right by him and didn't even bother killing him?

09. I can't say I was too sorry that Captain Miller died. I felt worse for his friend, who must have gotten shot about forty times before he actually died. The only part I liked about Miller was when he was shooting the pistol at the tank, and all of a sudden it exploded and you realized that the rescue planes had come. It reminded me a lot of that scene in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King where Pippin looks up to see the eagles... maybe that's where Peter Jackson got the idea.

10. Overall, I thought this was a really good movie. A little bit intense sometimes, but nothing too gory. The characters were likeable, the first and final battle scenes were amazing, and it raised a lot of thought-provoking questions about war. A lot of the cinematography was breath-taking (like the shots of the men walking across fields with bombs going off in the distance, and of course the shot of the ships landing on the beach). As in all war movies, a lot of people died, some of them characters you had invested in, but it was a great movie and I'd definitely watch it again!
