FORMAT: Movie
TITLE: The Libertine
ACTORS: Johnny Depp, Rosamund Pike

The last of the movies I had rented this weekend; I had rented it before, but was unable to get around to it. It was yet another one that I got just for the actor (in this case, Johnny Depp).

01. The prologue was pretty much the most brilliant thing ever.

02. I can never get over how amazing an actor Johnny Depp is. I don't understand why he hasn't won an Oscar yet; he looks so different in all of his other roles, and he takes on such complex ones (not to mention does them excellently), that there are probably few other actors who could match his versatility.

03. That said, I wasn't too crazy about the lighting in which the movie was shot. I know it was supposed to show how seedy the locations and topic matter were, but it felt rather oppressive and you could barely see what was going on at some points.

04. My brother walked in right as Rochester was sticking his hand between Elizabeth's legs. Luckily, just before he did they switched to a shot where they were about to kiss, and when my brother asked what it was about I said, "You won't like it, it's about Johnny Depp and sex." He walks away, and two seconds later they go back to the shot of him fingering her.

05. My mom also walked in, and I pretty much told her point-blank to go away (after fumbling around a bit and switching the input so it was a blue screen--not too suave on my part) because it would have been a totally embarrassing movie to watch with her.

06. That said, it was probably one of the worst (by worst I mean hardcore) R movies I've seen. A History of Violence had a shot of Maria Bello's crotch; The Libertine has scenes where girls are waving around dildos, the words "cunt" and "fuck" are used every other sentence, and views of group orgies in the street make up one interesting little montage. For the love of [insert preferred diety here], do not watch this with any family members that you have to interact with on a regular basis.

07. It took me awhile to recognize that Elizabeth was Rosamund Pike (Jane Bennet in the new Pride and Prejudice). She did a fantastic job, and in addition was unfairly gorgeous.

ETA: And apparently Norrington was in there, also!

08. Rochester's death was extremely painful to watch. Remind me never to have sex with someone who doesn't have up-to-date medical records, kthnx. One thing I didn't understand, though, was the bandage they wrapped around his nose at the very end. I also wasn't sure whether he was peeing or bleeding in that one scene where liquid was coming out of his pants. It looked kind of dark.

09. I have to say, I didn't really like this movie. Johnny Depp gave an amazing performance, as usual, but the coloring was distracting and I've never been a fan of plays, which obviously were central to the movie. Furthermore, I wasn't too impressed with the music, and the epilogue was rather pointless.
