Before I start this, I'd like to say that I'm not going to make a post about school today, simply because everything has pretty much already been said.
Moving right along, I have a mini rant about my Latin teacher, whom I will refer to as Mr. B. Mr. B. tends to go on these random tangents about history, and the other day he was talking about Kingdom of Heaven (the Orlando Bloom movie about the fall of Jerusalem). He said that the movie was completely historically inaccurate because of the following reasons:
1) Orlando Bloom's character, Balian, had no part in the defense of Jerusalem.
2) Balian's love interest, Sibylla, and her husband Guy de Lusignan died in jail after Saladin took over the kingdom. Sibylla was not actually his love interest.
3) Tiberias was already dead at the time of the Crusades.
I decided to research it, and discovered the following things:
1) Not only did Balian command the rearguard at Jerusalem, but all the knights swore oaths to him, because Sibylla was unable to defend the city. He also surrendered Jerusalem to Saladin. All of this was shown in the movie.
2) While Sibylla and Balian did not have a love affair, Balian's brother Baldwin did. Sibylla died during an epidemic at the Siege of Acre. Guy died of old age as the Lord of Cyprus.
3) Tiberias was not a person, but a city.
Now, while I agree that the movie was historically inaccurate, the fact that Mr. B. had his facts completely wrong pisses me off. If you're going to argue about something, know what you're talking about, especially if you're a teacher. You're not supposed to make up bullshit in front of your class. Seriously, wtf? It makes me wonder what else he's told us that was wrong. I mean, I like Mr. B. and all, because he's really nice and funny, but for God's sake do not give your students false information, especially when it's so easy to be proved wrong!
*gnashes teeth in frustration*
