Alright, to all you LOTR fanfic readers/writers, or just readers/writers in general (and particularly anyone who's ever hung around
deleterius), I have a question for you.
Would you rather read about an original character who falls in love with another original character, or does the cliched falls-in-love-with-Legolas thing?
In case that made no sense whatsoever, here's the deal. I'm writing an LOTR fanfic. It's about Guthwyn, the younger sibling of Eowyn and Eomer; she becomes a slave in Mordor. At this point, that's really all that's necessary to know.
I created another original character, Borogor, who I had planned on killing off. He was kind of like Aragorn, in a way: He was an amazing warrior, wise, and would do anything for his loved ones. Throughout Guthwyn's three years in Mordor, he always helped her and gave her support when she needed it.
Now, after he died, I had planned on Guthwyn realizing that she loved him, and eventually (years later) marrying Legolas. Just like millions of fanfiction pieces, but I liked the idea because marrying him would force her to uncover all of the psychological issues that had originated from her experiences in Mordor.
However, as Borogor's death draws closer, I find that I really, really don't want to kill him. It's like J.K. Rowling killing off one of the trio in Harry Potter. (Although, you know, she's spent a lot more time with her characters than I have.) I've been doubting my decision to kill him off, because I've realized that I like him and Guthwyn as a couple better than Guthwyn and Legolas.
The only way to achieve Borogor's living, and yet retain the storyline I originally had, would be to have her think that Borogor was dead, and for him to reappear later on. But would that seem too cliche? And furthermore, would any potential readers lose interest because she's in love with an original character, rather than someone we know from LOTR canon?
I really need help on this issue; I've been having major doubts about my decision, and with the scene of his death only three chapters away I need to solve this issue soon.
lanie__rose has given me enough input to the point where I'm 90% positive of what I'm going to do, but I would like to hear more from you guys. If you could just take a minute or two to tell me your thoughts (I know that
elven_minority and
__dittany are writers, and that
cactus_wren knows quite a bit about LOTR fic), I would greatly appreciate it.
Even if you've never read anything related to LOTR, I hope that you'll be able to let me know what you think!
Once again, please help me on this. It's becoming a major dilemma.
