FORMAT: CD
ARTIST: Tori Amos
TITLE: American Doll Posse
01. I must say, the cover art for this CD is rather freaky. Apparently, Amos is supposed to sing under multiple personas, each representing a different aspect of her personality, but I've never put much stock in roleplaying and I'm just going to treat the album as though she's singing it herself.
02. No offense, Tori, but don't throw in a one-minute song just so you can tell everyone you're political views. Saying George Bush sucks isn't exactly original.
03. "Big Wheel" is much better--it has more percussions than I've ever heard Amos use, and it's definitely more radio-friendly as a result. The only part I didn't get was where she said, "I am an M-I-L-F"--what does that stand for? I was thinking of mother-in-law, but that doesn't quite fit. In any case, I love this song!
04. "Fat Slut" should not have been on this album at all. There's no point to forty-second songs where you make your voice as terrible/scratchy as possible and then proceed to bitch about a failing relationship. Either make it a real song, or don't put it on the CD in the first place. Because, honestly, who would enjoy a half-assed track like that?
05. "Secret Spell" is an excellent song, even if I don't understand most of what she's talking about. That's the great (and frustrating) thing of her lyrics--they're so obscure, so heavily layered with metaphors, that there are about a bazillion different interpretations for each song. I wish she'd include a little booklet with each of her albums explaining what each track meant.
06. I love the song "Beauty of Speed." It sounds like it could easily belong on her last album, The Beekeeper (which I, contrary to most of her fanbase, loved).
07. The background of "Velvet Revolution" reminds me of a Greek restaurant I used to go to with my family... they had this exact same music playing in the background.
08. Overall, this album was pretty good. Only a few tracks made an impression on me, but I think American Doll Posse is one of those albums you have to listen to a couple of times in order to get a better understanding of it. There were a couple of misfires, most notably "Yo, George" and "Fat Slut," but for the most part Amos made sure to put actual songs on the CD--and the majority of these were good. For the moment, I'm debating between three and four stars...
