Happy Gondorian New Year everybody!
Today is the day that Frodo Baggins of the Shire completed his quest by destroying the Ring in the fires of Mount Doom. As you all know, he could not have achieved this feat without the help of Samwise Gamgee and Gollum, who nobly (or not-so-nobly) sacrificed himself for the Ring. I would like to take a moment to remember the demise of Gollum/Sméagol and mourn them.
Shortly after the Ring was destroyed, Gandalf upon Gwaihir and some other eagles arrived, taking the Ringbearer and Sam to Gondor.
Meanwhile, the Gondorians, the Rohirrim, Merry and Pippin, the Three Hunters, and Gandalf had just been engaged in a last duel with the Dark Lord Sauron's forces, hoping to draw them out of the Black Land to give Frodo a chance to finish the Quest. Although greatly outnumbered by the enemy's massive armies, they received help from the aforementioned eagles against the Nazgul, who undoubtedly would have caused greater damage. I would like to take another moment to mourn the passing of many fine Gondorian and Rohirric soldiers.
As March 25th was the day that Sauron was defeated, it became the Gondorian new year.
